Messaging as an Art Form
However, there is no need to think that with this, one has exhausted the romantic possibilities of messaging. Or condemned the art of communicating in fine language to the dustbin. Several factors make the twenty first century the most helpful for love and romance. The cellphone itself is just designed for intimacy, for the privacy one needs to conduct a liaison of any sort ? licit or illicit.

Short messaging serviceEnough is being written in the daily papers about the mutilation of the English language by people addicted to sms, or the Short Messaging Service offered by their cell phone service providers. British schoolchildren and teenagers are supposed to be the biggest culprits in this regard, along with millions of cell phone users in our own country. One only has to read the scrolling bar at the bottom of many programmes on satellite channels, where songs are aired with sms messages at the bottom that read, “I need u Priya” or “Have u 4gotten last night Anu? Luv Vikram? In fact, if one were to go by such reports, then “Cd u c me @ 4?” would be a most lover-like request via sms.

When you add to that the factor that most handsets now come equipped with that marvelous T9 option, the Dictionary, you can actually consider joining the ranks of those who are elevating romantic messaging to an art form.

When you use the Dictionary option, the most obscure words just come flowing out, and sentences like ?The ubiquitous street dog is witness to my strange passion?? can be easily formed. In addition to looking and sounding much better than the truncated speech of pre-teens, this flow of communication gives love-making a relaxed feel, more in keeping with poetry. Ultimately, this restores the dignity of both, the person who sends, and the one who receives, instead of making them feel like furtive or faulty individuals.

Unfortunately, in this age of media-orchestrated thought and imagination, several business houses have understood the power and possibility of messaging, and published books with appropriate messages that can be copied by the inarticulate, the shy, or the plain lazy. Walk into a big-sized bookshop, and you will find such books, just as, in the old days, you could find joke books, or books of insults (as if mugging up those would immediately make you a smarter or wittier person!)

To truly appreciate the possibilities of messaging, however, it is recommended that you ignore the books, or give them no more than a cursory glance. Instead, understand the marvelous freedom of a medium that allows you to proposition and be rebuffed in total privacy! ?How about a dinner for two on the rooftop of the Taj?? can be answered with quiet menace with ?I?d rather die instead, but before going I?ll knock all your teeth out!?

While this is being exchanged between two cellphones in a large hall full of cubicles filled with busily working professionals, the two individuals to whom the phones belong can seem industrious, and focused on commerce instead of camaraderie.

Returning to the ?ubiquitous street dog? aspect, another reason why messaging gives romance such a sweet well-rounded character is that it allows you to retain those elements that make love more delicious.

Some things that go into creative romantic messaging include:

? Snippets of songs you have loved and which seem especially meaningful ? in any language ? you can use the ?Insert Word? option to make your Dictionary do Hindu Telugu, Malayalam anything.

? Greetings for different times of the day, using different names and descriptions of the loved one ? all the things that reinforce intimacy and sharing.

? Descriptions of surroundings and ambience that underline the messager?s emotional state. ?I am walking with a heavy bag slung across my shoulder on this cold and lonely road, with only memories of you for company??

? Punctuation that brings out the meaningful silences that a loved one can fill with their imagination, such as ?

Before this becomes another ?how-to-do-it? manual of messaging, it is best to say that finally, how you message your loved one, and how you are received, is completely personal and individual, reflecting your special and unique nature, and the flow and intensity of your feelings for each other. Happy messaging!
