Every living soul on the face of the planet today, will agree that the so called “comfortable’ lives that we live is actually a double edged sword. In fact, the much sort after concept of lifestyle is the cause of what is popularly known as “lifestyle disease.” Most people today lead hectic and stressful lives. This leaves them with little time for relaxation and rejuvenation. The impact of the lack of the latter is apparent in every area of the person’s life. Hence, more and more people are beginning to feel the need for a practice or a service that will help them recover and rejuvenate in style. Thus, the word that is doing the rounds in the beauty, health, food and fitness world is – spa.
Some believe that the word spa originated from the name of an ancient Babylonian town of the same name. The town became so famous for its baths that the very word spa became synonymous with a place where one goes to rejuvenate and be pampered. Hence, today’s spas are considered to be centers for healing, nourishing, restoring and rejuvenating the body, mind and spirit. So, whether you are a tired business traveler trying to cope with jetlag or a hassled housewife trying to destress or maybe you are just expecting your bundle of joy and want to keep fit or maybe you’re someone who just likes keeping fit and looking good. Well, the spa is the place for you. Spas offer a wide variety of techniques and services. Both traditional and modern. In fact, most spas use combination techniques from the East and from the West - to meet the diverse needs of their clients.
The wellness industry which believes in a holistic approach to good living is growing in leaps and bounds in the country. The industry is valued at an approximated nine billion dollars in the country. According to industry experts the wellness industry is expected to grow by about 1.5 billion dollars in the next few years. The reasons for this being; firstly, rising disposable income and secondly lifestyle induced illnesses.

Keeping pace with the modern times Chennai now boasts of a number of spa saloons and day spas. The International Spa Association (ISPA) has defined the “ten domains of SPA” or segments of the industry as:

1.”The Waters”
2. Food, Nourishment, Diet and Nutrition
3. Movement, Exercise and Fitness
4. Touch, Massage, and Bodywork
5. Mind/Body/Spirit
6. Aesthetics, Skin Care, Natural Beauty Agents
7. Physical Space, Climatology, Global Ecology
8. Social/Cultural Arts and Values, Spa Culture
9. Management, Marketing, and Operations
10. Time, Rhythm, and Cycles
However, it is not necessary that every spa offer all these facilities. There are day spas that offer only one kind of treatment and there are destination spas which offer wellness packages which are a combination of treatments, exercise, massage etc.

The Jiva Spa, at Fisherman’s Cove is arguably one of the finest in the southern part of the country. It offers clients an authentic Indian spa experience. The success of their treatments lies in the correct blending of ancient Indian wisdom with contemporary therapies. The spa offers therapies like aromatherapy massages, yoga, meditation and a host of other time tested ancient Indian rejuvenation practices.

ORYZA, a day spa, in Chennai uses a combination of Oriental and European spa techniques for a rejuvenating experience. According to Ms. Sanjana, consultant beautician at the Oryza day spa, “We offer a wide range of treatments which range from soaks, scrubs and massages which are aromatic, Thai and Ayurvedic. We have separate sections for men and women.” The spa uses only natural products for all its treatments. When asked how expensive is it to rejuvenate and get pampered at ORYZA? She says, “well we are very reasonably priced. Our treatments start at a thousand rupees only. The premium pack, which takes about half a day to complete is priced at four thousand rupees.”
The Chi spa- which at the Traders hotel offers treatments based on Chinese and Himalayan healing concepts.

Chennai’s Naturals Beauty Salon also offers spa treatments. They use internationally popular holistic techniques to treat pigmentation, acne, and premature ageing and obesity problems. Oxygen therapy, for example, increases the absorption of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, proteins and other important nutrients, helping your skin stay healthy. The salon also offers facials, eye treatments, massages with aromatherapy oils, and a hand and foot spa to pamper your hand and feet.

The convergence of healthcare, beauty, wellness and holidays or leisure built around traditional medicinal systems is the trend that is fast catching on and those who are aware of this are cashing in on it heavily. One of the latest entrants in wellness industry is the Sanctuary Spa. They have the experience of running two successful day spas in neighbouring Sri Lanka. Though getting pampered here might dig a hole in the pocket with a manicure costing a thousand rupees, Therapists here say that it’s well worth a try.

Another thing that has become very popular with the popularity of spas is the spa cuisine- which is made of the freshest organically grown fruit, vegetables and the healthiest meats.

With so many spas some ranging from the exotic to the very practical beckoning you, its time to take a break and rejuvenate the holistic way!
