The Oscar winning crime drama The Departed was a much awaited film coming soon after Di Caprio’s other release Blood Diamond, which also created waves in India.

Taboo Relationships: The Story of Power‘Nishabd’ has predictably let out the cat from the bag of socially sanctioned relationships. The Ram Gopal Varma conceived film starring Amitabh Bachchan as a 60 year old photographer who falls in love with an 18 year old Jiah Khan has provoked many reactions, and set the small screen alight with Amitabh interviews and discussions. For the actor, this is undoubtedly an opportunity to take his relationship with the audience one step further. When and if he bids the silver screen goodbye, he need not have any regrets for not having tried doing this or that.

For the rest of us however, ‘Nishabd’ brings out some uncomfortable facts that reflect the skewed nature of the relationship between the sexes in some social contexts. One very important protest against ‘Nishabd’ has come from Amitabh’s political opponents – some Youth Congress leaders in UP. Their complaint is that as brand ambassador for UP, Amitabh should not have acted in such a film. Considering his overall clout among the national audience, such a role will only embolden other men in the elder age group to emulate Amitabh’s screen example, these men say. They also consider his ‘Nishabd’ portrayal to be an attack on the traditional Indian joint family system, where elder in laws and grandparents have to live with their offspring.

Smart SnackingDo not eat in between meals if you want to keep the fat off was the golden rule of dieting at one time. So is snacking on greasy samosas, buttery, melt in the mouth sandwiches the list can actually go on and on. But, as most dietitians will agree that it is not snacking that is bad but it is snacking on the wrong kind of food that they advice against.

Today, doctors, dieticians and nutritionists are of the opinion that intelligent snacking is an excellent way of meeting the body’s nutritional needs. The latest research findings show that smart snacking every three to four hours is the best way for controlling the urge to overeat at meal times. An urge that is common among obese people. In fact, nowadays medical practitioners believe that snacking is probably a healthier eating option for the body than eating four large meals everyday.

They have discovered that this eating pattern lowers cholesterol levels and helps regulate blood sugar levels better. Besides, there is no doubt eating every few hours can help prevent overeating, which is beneficial for people who are trying to lose weight.

'If I were PM'One recent evening Amitabh Bachchan was being interviewed on both the major English news channels on TV. Doubtless, post-‘Nishabd’ and pre-‘Cheeni Kam’, and with the UP assembly elections mere weeks away, such interviews will be repeated across other channels as well. Perhaps by then, one’s patience in switching channels and tracking every word of his, will also have worn off. Who can tell?

Anyway, the interview I recall had members of the audience asking questions of the Big B. He answered every single query with complete mastery – nothing could have bettered the picture of humility he painted when asked about his success – he said that he always remembered that his mother had brought him home from hospital, travelling in a ‘tonga’ wrapped in old muslin clothes – ‘gudadi’ in Hindi. This picture helped him retain his equanimity, he said. If this is even fifty per cent true, it says something for his sagacity. If all of us could only remember the humble origins of our fathers, or grandfathers, or even our own state some years before we hit the top of the corporate ladder, or made such a pile, we would be better off. The world would have a fair share of good human beings instead of people determined to trample upon others in their climb to success. Well done, Amitabh, I thought. You have really given people a good pointer to keeping their balance.
