Shilpa shetty and Richard GereIn a world where cross cultural influences are seen in every aspect of life, it seems shocking when a whole society is thrown into a state of chaos just because someone has kissed somebody on stage in public. Let us take the case of actress Shilpa Shetty and actor Richard Gere.

It seems not only strange but bizarre that in a country which has to battle against a host of grave and serious issues, a sizeable portion of the people of this country, and the politicians considered it more important to create uproar about this. Calling it a heinous act of misconduct and a direct insult of Indian values. And the media gave it optimum coverage for days.

The moral police of our country have ignored the fact that despite all our high moral standards we did not have to make much effort to be ranked second among the countries that have the highest number of HIV positive people in the world.

However, this is not something that has happened for the first time. If we jog our memories a little we will find that similar upheavals were created when MS. Shabana Azmi gave a peck on Nelson Mandela’s cheek. If the fundamentalists were to have their way then Ms. Azmi would long have been stoned to death.

If public viewing of a kiss is anti Indian values then, the question that logically comes to mind is that how is it that Indian movies with intimate and passionate kissing scenes get released with an “A” certificate for public viewing?

In Kolkata there is a lane called lover’s lane. Curious to find out how the place got its name I asked an ancient resident of the area. She smiled coyly and said just come here between six and nine in the evening and you will find out. There are rows of cars with a man and a woman seeking to steal a few minutes of passion. A few minutes I say because soon the official “moral guardians” the police will arrive and they have to pay a fee for breaking the unwritten rules of intimacy in public places.

What if after reading the criticisms being showered on them these self proclaimed moral police were to make rules? In my opinion these are some of the initial measures they would take.

  • Like smoking zones, there would be no kissing zones.
  • The directive principle of state policy that states Indians can assemble freely without arms will now read- All Indian can assemble freely without arms and lips.
  • Milestones will read- no kissing within 3 kms.

I agree with you. Well , this is the society we are living in . If one carries a survey on the bunch of hypocrites (which is next to impossible!) there is 100% guarantee that these people who raised such a hue and cry over the issue are themselves sitting on a pile of hidden dirty truths which are cleanly curtained inside their homes. Actually these people are frustrated bunch of jokers who are in desperate need of publicity. I really pity on their pathetic lives!
