Paruthi VeeranFilm : Paruthi Veeran
Starring : Karthi, Priyamani, Saravanan, Kanja Karuppu
Director : Ameer

The film stands apart from the normal fare that seems to be coming out of Kollywood these days. Set in the rural heartland of the state, it brings with it the flavour of the region and the whiff of the soil that it is so firmly grounded in. After the critically acclaimed Ram, this is director Ameer’s next venture, so naturally expectations were high. The film exceeds them by far.

Paruthi (Karthi) is a village wastrel who lives a life of petty crime, his only dream to make it to the central Madras jail! His uncle (Saravanan) is his friend and guide and the two live a happy –go –lucky existence, in  and out of jails, in their native village.

Enter Muthuazhagu (Priyamani), a childhood sweetheart of Paruthi, who now doesn’t reciprocate any of the romantic feelings she has for him. But the lady is determined to marry only him, despite his lack of interest. To add to her problems is the enemity between her love and her father, extending back decades.

But one incident changes Paruthi’s attitude  and he realises the value of her love and approaches her family for her hand in marriage. But its certainly not a bed of roses for the duo, with firm and violent opposition to the proposal.

So the duo decide to elope. But fate overtakes them. Are the lovers united or does Paruthi’s violent past overtake them? See the movie and the astounding climax to find out.

The director has brought out the best from every character, with some great scenes by Kanja Karuppu who conveys the comedy with just a look.

Newcomer Karthi displays his histronical talents in a way that makes one forget that this is his debut film. Getting into the skin of the character, his is a brilliant and powerful debut, raking greater expectations from him in future projects.

Ably supported by co-actor Priyamani, the duo share a great chemistry, their innocent yet deep love, amply conveyed by expressions, situations, gestures and some great songs by Yuvan Shankar Raja.
Priyamani’s de glam look seems to bring out her natural beauty and adds strength to the spunky,  no-nonsense character she portrays. Ramji’s camera work is excellent especially in the sepia coated flashback scenes. The music with stress on folk tunes is something that captures your imagination and a couple of lilting numbers will stay to haunt you.
Simple and  rooted to the earth, far from urban landscapes, the movie still manages to strike a deep chord with viewers both rural and urban, because of the manner of storytelling. A must watch film.
