Clock Watchers Inc.Every office has them, and sometimes, they develop a reputation of their own. As the hands of the clock start to creep to five thirty, or six, as the case may be, these workers tidy up their desks, go to the toilet in preparation for their commute, shut down their computers, and leave. No forces of man and nature have yet been found who can get them to stay a minute beyond the stipulated office timings.

“Its mostly women with small children who are real clock watchers,” says Rajiv Batra, who works in a leading firm of engineering consultants. “You can actually set your watch by their movements. No matter what the work situation is, you cannot get them to stay a minute more – even if they somehow stay late, they will be so reluctant, so unfocused, that they cannot do the work properly.” Does management tend to get prejudiced against such people? “Not really,” says Rajiv. “The rest of the time, during the day, most of these women will actually be quite good at what they do. It’s the post-office hours commitment that they are not capable of.”

Not Tonight DarlingIt’s 10.30 at night. The children have dropped off to sleep. The last dirty plate has been removed from the table and placed in the sink. Hastily picking up articles from the floor, cleaning up the kitchen and clearing up the general mess, the lady of the house stifles a yawn, knowing it will be quite awhile before she can call it a day. For waiting in the wings, is her stressed-out husband, anxiously wanting to release his pent-up passion.

It will not do to annoy him. She can prevaricate at best. Feign a headache which eventually becomes all too real. Plead tiredness perhaps. But eventually it’s got to be gone through.
