Cheeni KumFilm : Cheeni Kum
Starring : Amitabh Bachchan, Tabu, Paresh Rawal, Zohra Sehgal
Director : Balki

After Nishabd, Cheeni Kum stars the Big B in yet another younger woman versus much older man romance. But Cheeni kum is quite different from the earlier film and makes for a great love story. Whereas in the older film the protagonist was  a married old man, in love with a girl his daugher’s age, in Cheeni Kum the big B plays a very plausible character of a young at heart 64 year old chef, who meets a girl he falls for, though she is 30 years younger than him. Its to the lead pairs credit that they pull off this romance in a very convincing way.

Buddhadev ( Amitabh) is famous restaurateur cum chef of an Indian restaurant in  London. One day he runs into Nina ( Tabu ) a client with whom he has an argument on the first meeting itself.

But as the days progress the two start meeting regularly and discover that their age differences are no barrier in their liking for each other. So he proposes and she accepts.
But when her father ( Rawal) falls ill in Delhi and she flies back, he is later forced to follow her to ask her hand in marriage officially. The only problem is that he is six years older to his father –in-law!

So naturally there is tough opposition, with the dad going into a fast unto death to protect his daughter. But the duo are determined and how they convince her father forms the climax.

The movie has some charmingly romantic moments between the lead pair as their love  blossoms quite naturally with the vibes and interests they share. Zohra as Amitabhs mom is a livewire. The movie’s message is clear- age in no barrier for love because its how young you are at heart and the zest you have for life that makes life after marriage, an interesting experience.

Though there are some tiresome oneliners in the film the climax arguments  are quite convincing. Paresh Rawal’s ability to add a touch of the comical to everything he does is a treat to watch. Tabu looks ravishing and has handled her role with exceptional maturity. The big B plays hero at 64 and gives the younger brigage a run for their money!

Definitely a must watch film for all ages.
