Listening MusicWe all know that eating healthy food, regular exercise and leading a fairly systematic and disciplined life holds the key to a healthy life. But, is it enough for us to have a healthy, disease free body and an alert mind to be able to improve the quality of our lives and enjoy life to the fullest? This is a question that has remained foremost on my mind ever since I met little Raju.

Raju was about six years old. I first met him at the cancer ward for children in the Adyar Cancer research centre. His body was frail, diseased and incapable of doing much. But his eyes, they were the windows of his indomitable spirit. He was sure that he would be able to walk to the garden and fly a kite even on the morning he died.

Though no one can say for sure, yet, there seems to be a connection between the body, mind and spirit. And there is a definite connection between the three. It is essential for all the three components to be in harmony with each other for one to lead a quality and truly “happy life”. Research has shown how positive beliefs and attitudes, strength gained from religion, meditation and prayer can enhance healing and eventually lead to a sense of well-being.

Today most of us fall prey to the two silent killers work pressure and stress. So, here are some simple and easy to practice ideas for maintaining inner tranquility that will help in improving your productivity, relationships and also inner tranquility. Though I say that these are simple and easy steps I must admit that at the end of the day everything does not work for everybody. So, you’ve got to figure out what works for you and stick to that.

Step 1 is to identify the things that help you feel peaceful, help you to connect with things around you. Stuff like this could be as different as there are people - reading a book, sitting in the midst of nature, paling music or simply watching television.

Step 2 set aside a little time everyday to do the things you have identified. Make this a priority and a habit.

Steps 3 consciously develop a positive mindset. This will help you develop an enviable inner serenity. This may not ensure that you will never be ill. Or that you will be cured as if by some miracle. But it will ensure that you have a calm mind and are surrounded by a feel good factor at all times. It will help you cope better with the challenges that life hurls at you!
