PalanquinArrive in style and make a statement! While vehicles of family and friends are often used, hiring a car such as a luxurious Rolls Royce, a Model ‘T’ Ford or a racy sports car makes a classic statement in style. Vintage cars can be hired from individuals belonging to Vintage Car Clubs. A hired limousine is useful in that it can accommodate most of the bridal party. Remember that the vehicle of choice is often used as a prop in the photographs as well. So think about whether it will be worth the expense if you want generations of cousins and friends oohing and aahing over how romantic your wedding snaps are.

Marriage EnsembleJust the poignant wail of the ’shehnai’ and the uplifting beat of the ‘dholak’ is enough for any Indian to know that there is a wedding on in the neighborhood. No wedding can be considered complete without music, especially the sangeet and mehendi parties that are all the rage with a most families. But while the wedding ceremony is usually accompanied with traditional tunes, the reception party can have just about anything your heart desires. Some folks prefer live sounds or pleasant dance tunes to take care of the entertainment while yet others opt for a DJ to get the guests to shake a leg.

RomanceI had decided to take the plunge. I seriously believed that I had found ‘The One’ that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with, for better or worse, till death do us part. I had wined her and dined her, found the key to her heart and even surrendered mine. All that remained was to pop the question. And trying to find the perfect moment almost led to the end of me.

I knew she was a girl who would expect something far out and romantic - something that would make for a great story - one she would want narrate over and over for all her friends and relatives and then for the next generation of our family. This was enough to make me break into a sweat with the weight of expectation on my head but I knew I had to come up with something good and fast or I might lose her forever.

Cream complexionWe’ve all heard the saying that ‘granny knows best.’┬áThis column will feature some of granny’s age-old remedies.

With the weather playing havoc with everyone’s health and allergies and flu in the air, it is necessary to drink a lot of fluids to ensure that you don’t get dehydrated.

For respite from dry cough, swallow a couple of pinches of turmeric (haldi) powder mixed with a teaspoon of honey. As an alternative to alcohol-laced cough syrups, you could try chewing on a cardamom (elaichi).

Wedding SuitIf you are getting married in the near future, you owe it to the love of your life to look your very best even if it means having to actually go shopping!

As a rule, the male of the species hates being told what to do. That is, until it comes down to ‘what to wear’. Then they usually have their mothers select, buy and even choose daily what they have to wear. Then there are those men (this is a generalization of sorts, so if you disagree with anything written here, you probably belong to the other category) who spend their formative years either imitating their dad’s way of dressing or rebelling and doing the exact opposite. Once they find a style that they are comfortable with, no one, and I repeat, no one can make them change their mind.
