Anorexia NervosaIn the business of medicine, the fastest burgeoning branch is the fat factory. Slimming clinics, easy weight-loss diets, fat-to-fit strategies, colonic irritation, ayurvedic magic potions, instant allopathic tablets, you name it, it’s there screaming in your face, in newspapers, hoardings and unasked for flyers sneaked into Sunday papers. And beyond that is Anorexia Nervosa, a desperate diet-till-you-die disorder, more than a thousand times worse than being ‘FAT’. Sonali Behl discovers some shocking truths

“Doctor, I’m getting married in two months and I want to lose weight.”

A most reasonable aspiration for a lissome figure and glowing skin tone for the biggest day in her life, but what the words do not adequately convey on paper is the fierce desperation in her voice. Confronted by the young woman’s obvious distress, the doctor walked her to the glass door at the entrance to his office, overlooking the waiting lounge, and pointed to a 40-year-old extremely thin woman, waiting patiently for her turn.

Mehendi CeremonyReligious fervour, lavish hospitality, and dollops of fun! These are the makings of a Sindhi wedding. Sonali Behl reports

For a community scattered all over the world, well-known for its money-making enterprises, colourful printed shirts and outlandishly embroidered clothes, the Sindhis are among the most cosmopolitan and broad-minded of Indians. Yet, when it comes to marriage rituals, the community’s religious fervour is undiminished, focusing on myriad ceremonies with the same enthusiasm of striking multi-million dollar deals. The Sindhi marriage is an elaborate experience with dollops of fun shoveled in to keep every one happy and smiling.

It begins, as all good things must, on a quiet understated note. A small woman (oh, she’s usually small… if she’s taller than 5 feet, eyebrows would be raised about her appetite!), clad in a rumpled not-so white sari, with thinning white hair tied in a miniature chhoti, struts into the house. She is the ubiquitous Guryanni, a family Brahmini whose presence is a must on all joyous, sad and hallowed occasions, to assist in regulating the religious rites and ensure that no transgressions occur, especially in the offerings to the gods, and his servant. She usually carries an oversized cloth bag, within which are at least another three smaller bags to carry away the rice, sugar, fruit and coconuts.

DivorceDivorce is never a pleasant experience. The emotions involved before, during and after divorce can be painful, confusing, complex and sometimes frightening.

Picking up the threads and moving on may seem like the most difficult thing to do and requires considerable effort and adjustment. We spoken to people who have had to grapple with divorce induced trauma - people who have emerged triumphant after the ordeal and are now leading more productive, fulfilling lives.

Actress Farha married Vindhu Singh, Dhara Singh’s son at the peak of her film career and happily threw it all away just to be the quintessential Indian wife. When things began spiraling out of control, she opted for a divorce after ten years of marriage. The decision left her with custody of her young son but minus a steady source of income and a roof over her head. She had to start from scratch.
