Wedding CakeWhen you think of wedding receptions, what is the one thing that they all have? A “stately mountain of snowy frosting and royal icing blossoms,” aka The wedding cake! Not bad for a dessert which has its roots clear back to the Roman Empire. But back then, there was no beautifully decorated, sweet confection.

Instead, a loaf of barley bread was broken over the bride’s head to symbolize her fertility. Can you imagine picking crumbs out of your hair? As the barley bread evolved into today’s wedding cake, the symbolism of the cake and the cake cutting ceremony evolved into your first joint act as a married couple, your commitment to provide for each other, and the sweet life you will share together.

Bringing back the zing in your relationship

Zing in your relationshipIt’s eight o’ clock in the Gupta household. The children have been served dinner. Madhu and Ravi wait patiently as they finish. Then they are tucked into their beds with a story and a goodnight kiss each. The couple returns to the living room. The dishes are dried and put away. The television is turned off and the couple retires for the night. Then there is the ritual love making and each one turns to his/her side of the bed and is fast asleep.

Like most couples who have been married a while sex for Madhu and Ravi has become another chore in the to do list. Both crave for the passion that was there between them in the early years of their marriage. Yet, they find themselves merely performing a function only so that they can still tell themselves that they have a healthy relationship. A fact that finds expression in a statement like, ‘I really feel bad for some of my friends who have no life as a couple, you know what I mean.’

Pre-wedding Trivia: Some points to ponder

MandapThe Washington Post reports an increase in pre-wedding investigations by detectives hired by families to investigate the other side in today’s prosperous India. The biggest ’sources’ for such detectives are domestic servants! So snoop’s the word as far as cooks, housemaids, drivers and others are concerned.

Gujarati wedding customs have the groom’s mother-in-law trying to catch his nose on arrival of the baraat, as a reminder of the fact that he is taking away her daughter and is now responsible for her happiness. If this makes for red-nosed grooms, so be it!

Pre-wedding nervesButterflies in the stomach is quite an adequate description. So is dryness in the mouth, weak knees, thudding heart and many other such symptoms of emotional upheaval and stress. Its natural to feel all this and more as you are headed for the flower-bedecked ‘mandap’ where you are going to be joined to your partner in holy matrimony. After all, this is one of the most important events in your life. The attention of every person present is on you (well, almost – except for the little nephews and nieces running madly around the wedding area!) and it is natural to feel a combination of nervousness, shyness, and many other emotions at leaving behind one life and stepping into another.

Pre-marriage nerves are such a classic phenomenon that they also have classic remedies. The bachelor ‘stag’ party is one such dubious solution. The friends of the bridegroom get together and get drunk. By their combined antics they successfully distract the chap getting married from any anxious thoughts about his impending nuptials. However, the biggest drawback of this classic remedy is that the groom himself sometimes lands up on the marriage morning smelling of rotted grapes when he should be smelling of cedar and lemon. There has to be a better way.

Mauve TrendFashion and fads may be the drivers of many wardrobes and dressing styles, but today’s world provides a lot of space for individuality – that particular expression of your personality that translates as your own style. The way you wear your clothes, your accessories and personal effects, your speech mannerisms – all are elements of a style of your own. For most of us, this is nothing but a modification of present fashionable standards to suit ourselves. But for some, it is a completely unique presentation of their assets and attributes.

However, you don’t have to become a glaringly ‘different’ rebel in order to have a personal style that is distinct, yet pleasing and acceptable to most people. In fact, personal style can be a combination of some perfectly ordinary things that all add up to something special only because of your ability to carry them off.
