A Frined In NeedDrishya’s footsteps picked up speed as she walked the last few metres of platform to where her train waited. Even as she hurried, she could see the strangeness of her departure. “Please don’t worry – I will manage,” she had said, to not one but two sets of anxious parents – hers and Pradeep’s. With both of them wanting to see her off, she had been keen to avoid a tug-of-war farewell. “Better this lonely setting off than the tension of keeping each of them away from the others’ throats,” she was thinking to herself.

She had barely settled in with her luggage into the compartment when the train began to move on its night-long journey to Hyderabad – the city where she was moving – to a new assignment, a new life. As she watched images of Chennai slide slowly past, Drishya could not help the prickle of tears behind her eyelids, tears she thought had dried forever in the months following the accident that changed her life forever.

BridesmaidRagini’s birthday was a riotous affair at the office. Somebody had tied three balloons to her desk. Every few seconds, a colleague popped up to wish her. During lunch hour there was a party like atmosphere in the lunch room, with even her boss dropping in to wish her and say a few words. After he left, her face was smeared with cake, and she was given a few ‘birthday bumps’ by her more enthusiastic colleagues. Clearly, she was ‘Miss Popularity’ around her co-workers.

The trouble was, she was still ‘Miss’.

“When I think of that particular day, it was one of the days when it hit me more than other times,” recalls this executive in a leading mobile service provider. “My colleagues were celebrating my thirty-third birthday. I was laughing, cracking jokes, accepting their gifts or brickbats…but internally I was thinking, ‘If everyone here likes me so much, how come no one has liked me enough to marry me ever?’ By that evening, I was depressed, even though I didn’t dare show it to my friends.”

Caring for each otherA lot is written and discussed about love. What is love? What are the different types of love? What phases does love go through? And so on. You presume that when someone says that ‘I love you’, he/she cares for you. He/she cares for your likes and dislikes, cares for your comfort, cares to keep you happy and takes care not to hurt you. And you do the same for him/her. Unless one cares, how can love be complete?

It is like saying that you love birds. One day, when you find an injured bird, you don’t pick it up and take it to get treated. Can you still say that you love birds? Many relationships suffer immeasurably, because partners claim that they love each other, but show no care.

Why do you get attracted to someone?

Getting attractedLook around you and you will find that most of your friends are looking for different kinds of partners. Somebody wants a partner with lots of money. Somebody wants a partner with lots of sex appeal. Somebody wants a partner with great looks.

Somebody wants a partner who is a genius forget the looks. Somebody wants a partner who will only love him or her. And so it goes. Why there is so much dissimilarity in partner preference amongst friends? Friends who are so alike each other in their choices differ greatly when it comes to choice of partners, why?
