Wedding BanquetYour wedding reception may seem overwhelming to plan and orchestrate because of the many elements, so timing is essential.

Traditionally, the reception is a feast of celebration with family and friends, of the union just created. This is the time when you and your groom get to sit back, relax and enjoy the festivities. The frustration and stress that you’re facing right now will have magically disappeared, and you will feel a sense of accomplishment in the success of the day.

When setting out in search of a reception venue, remember that the popular places are often booked up as much as a year in advance, so start enquiring as soon as possible. You’ll be surprised at the variety of venues available, so before you begin your quest, look at the various choices.

Restaurants are a popular choice, and a good option for the smaller wedding. Many restaurants will give you exclusive use of their facilities, at a reasonable cost. Some however, are not laid out for functions and suitable areas for photography may be difficult to find. Lack of space may result in guests not being able to see the main table and time restraints will have to be checked.

Function Venues vary in standard however, most have specialised decor suited to weddings. Since you won’t be attending to the finer details yourself on the day, the personal attention offered by these venues is a huge plus. Some even offer their own chapel, allowing you and your guests to enjoy the wedding without having to travel to the reception.

Hotels and Conference Centres’ prices vary considerably. Various rooms are usually on offer, so when you book, make sure you know which room you have secured, this will need to be detailed on the invitation and may require some additional decor. Good hotels provide excellent food and many offer their bridal suite as part of the deal.

Marquees are romantic; they transform your garden into a fantasy fairytale, but the work involved may become stressful. Utilising professional hiring and catering companies will avoid disappointment. When organising a wedding at home, carefully consider the advantages of hiring a professional wedding co-ordinator.

Clubs are usually good value for money for their members, some have marquees and beautiful grounds for photographs.

Church, School or Municipal Halls are inexpensive to hire, but the tables, chairs, crockery and cutlery are usually not suitable for weddings. Decor and catering will be your own responsibility, but if you have the time and energy, you’ll enjoy doing it yourself and considerable savings can be made.

Tips:

Cost - don’t choose a venue that you cannot afford. Be warned there are many hidden costs in any wedding. Work out your budget carefully and shop around before securing a booking.

Availability - your venue should be chosen first; before committing yourself to other arrangements like the flowers and cakes, secure the date with the venue. Don’t be put off if the venue you love is full every Saturday - there are only 52 Saturdays in a year and Friday and Sunday weddings are becoming more popular. Some venues even offer discounts for weddings held during the week.

Date - Spring and Summer weddings are always the most fashionable, but avoid the holiday months.
