Jaipur PalaceMarriages are indeed made in heaven. But the actual wedding takes place on earth. It is precisely for this reason why probably more and more couples are in search for the perfect place to wed.

No longer is it passé to have a wedding in a church or mandap. While there is nothing wrong with those either and a good many are having their weddings in these places, increasingly couples are on the look out for unique places to make their weddings memorable, one of a kind.

Basically the choice of venue depends on the number of invitees and the affordability factor also plays a crucial role in this decision making. However, there seems to be a trend to splurge since it is once in a lifetime event.

Initially, weddings happened in the wedding halls. Later they were conducted in banquet halls which later graduated to five star hotels to farm houses. Today, having weddings in palaces seem to be the ‘in’ thing.

Call it the post ‘Liz Hurley - Arun Nayar’ connection but weddings in palaces seem to have a strong favor among the wedding parties. After all a bride does feel and look like a princess on her wedding day. It is only natural that the regalia be extended to the surroundings per se.

Vijay Bhat of Exotic Weddings says, “The Jaipur palace is fully booked for two years now.” The reason being that the ‘Rajputana’ theme is easy to execute. However, this is very elite and since the wedding is thematic, there is a dress code and protocol needs to be maintained.

Another popular venue is the beach. Vijay opines that the wedding families fly to Goa to have a beach wedding. If they can afford it, they even have weddings in Malaysia or Bali. “It has become a fad” quips he.

Vijay suggests the backwaters of Kerala are another unique destination. The actual wedding can be conducted in the houseboat while the rest of the functions can be on the shore.

However, in the South, people still prefer the traditional mandap for weddings. Rajkumar of Simplivents says, “When it comes to the wedding, customers want a marriage hall. They might think of innovations and themes but the venue is still the mandap.”

Rajkumar also adds, “There are very few good marriage halls. More so, if the client has specifications the choice becomes restricted.”

Another trend that Rajkumar observes is that a few clients prefer to have the wedding in a resort. This way the guests are also in within the venue and can be present for all the rituals of the wedding.

Yogesh Aseria of Celebrations - The Concept Shop observes the latest trend in South is to have weddings in farm houses. The entire function is held for two days exclusively in the farm house with all the guests put up in the premises.

The influences can be many and films are also one of the reasons for the search of the venue.

Even the West is not immune from it. The latest being, with the hit of the musical (Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan) movie – Mama Mia – Greece seems to the preferred destination for weddings.

So while you hear about ‘under water weddings’ and ‘in the sky nuptials’ - what matters most is the exchange of vows and when you say “I do” to each other – it could be in any language or any religion or any custom or any ritual – it is in the eyes of God and this vow is a sacred oath undertaken to cherish each other and be there for better or worse, in good times and bad… it is for a lifetime. That’s what matters and remember it is for keeps.

As long as you know the rules … have fun and go for the perfect place on earth to be wed to the man of your choice with whom you intend to spend the rest of you life with.
