Wedding receptionWith all the details that go into planning a wedding, simple wedding reception ideas are a great way to pull off your party without a lot of stress. By taking advantage of your reception’s location, the season, or even things you already have in your home, you can plan a simple yet beautiful party for you and your guests.

Location, Location, Location

One of the easiest ways to pull off a simple wedding reception is to have it in a gorgeous location. For example, consider having your wedding reception at an exclusive club downtown, in a room full of windows overlooking the city at sunset, or in a bed and breakfast reception center in a picturesque rural area. Add some basic cocktail foods and a band or DJ and you’re done.

Location can be the focal point of other simple wedding reception ideas, too. If you’re getting married in or near a park, on the beach, or in an art gallery, museum or even just a beautiful restaurant, the location can set the scene.

None of these places need many wedding reception decorations because they’re already so beautiful. Basic rented tables and chairs with plain tablecloths (or fancier if you like) are all you will need to pull off a lovely reception – and some locations may already have these on hand. Remember to gear your food choices to the location if necessary – people eating outside will prefer foods that aren’t messy, for example.

You can also play up the theme of your reception based on its location. For example, throw a garden party themed reception, complete with delicate sandwiches and tea, if you’re partying in the park. Try a clambake on the beach or a swanky cocktail party-style reception in a new age art gallery.

Setting the Season

Another easy theme for your wedding reception is the season in which you are getting married. This is particularly true if you’re getting married in a church and it’s Easter or Christmas. There will already be a lot of altar decorations around for your ceremony, and you may be able to move these centerpieces to your reception spot with the promise that you’ll return them before the next service.

This is a great, inexpensive way to decorate for your reception, but even if you don’t have a church’s decorations to borrow, by shopping for décor enough in advance you can find wonderful silk flower arrangements and other decorations at a great price if you shop right after the holiday.

Again you can link your food choices to the holiday and décor of your reception. For example, try a fancy spin on ham (like prosciutto-wrapped melon?) for a spring fete, or a tasty fruitcake as your groom’s cake around the holidays. The key is to not be too literal in your interpretation of holiday classics, but to give a nod to the season.
Simple Wedding Reception Ideas from Your House

If you’re stumped for wedding reception ideas, take a look around your home. Do you love to travel? Have a passion for art? Share a favorite sports team with your future spouse?

All of these can be potential starting points for simple wedding reception ideas, and you may even be able to use memorabilia from your house to decorate. For example, if you’re traveling to Europe for your honeymoon and have been there before, have pictures of your travels blown up and posted around the room, or use a small picture or postcard as a table number, with each table representing a city and decorated accordingly.

A favorite sports team can inspire the color scheme for your reception, and even the party favors, if you can find a tiny item related to your team or buy candies in those colors.

Your wedding reception should be a reflection of you and your spouse-to-be. It should show the world who you are as a couple and how you want to entertain in the future. Whether that’s a laid-back, come-as-you-are style or something completely formal and modern, you can still come up with a simple way to present your ideals as you and your spouse throw your first party as husband and wife.
