Changing shades of togethernessIf your work often brings you into contact with married couples, like my consultation as a Tarot practitioner does, over a period of time you begin to notice a distinct difference in partners’ attitudes, usually depending on the vintage of the marriage. In this context, I am specially referring to the need for togetherness, and the way people’s attitude changes towards it, with time.

Among young people, who have been married just a few months or years, one encounters wives who yearn for their husbands to spend more time with them, help them with household chores, try to see their point of view – in short, take the place of the friends and family they left behind when they got married. In these cases, the husbands seem aware they are treading a difficult path. They steal a few moments with their friends every now and then, while attempting to stay true to the ‘family man’ image their wives have obviously built for them. In front of their friends, men may pretend as if they don’t care about their wives’ expectations or needs, but in fact they do, a lot. Young husbands also look for togetherness – a partner who finally looks up to them, gives them unconditional love and acceptance, and makes them qualified to be that wonderful thing: fathers!

The Enigma, ElizabethNo woman of her time has been so extensively written about. Reigning supreme for more than six decades, she was the ultimate fantasy, an American icon whose radiant beauty and tempestuous lifestyle held a nation in thrall for what seems like forever. Captured in the 464 pages of biographer J. Randy Taraborrelli’s captivating book – Elizabeth — is the attempt to explain what made Elizabeth Taylor such an enigma.

Hers was the face that launched a thousand ships. A beauty beyond compare, gentle and caring at her core and born to an affluent family,  Elizabeth Taylor became a legend in her own lifetime. With her childhood nipped in the bud by the ambitions of an over-reaching mother, Elizabeth was catapulted into stardom by the enormous success of her first major film, National Velvet and the sheer willpower of a woman born to be an actress destined to take the world by storm.

Don't Mother Your ManVarsha (not her real name) is an ex colleague of mine whose level of professional competence has won her international acclaim. Strong and successful, she is a woman who admires initiative in her staff. But recently when I happened to stay over at her place, I discovered a side to her which I had never known.. It was not the surfacing of a ministering angel as much as the emergence of a mothering monster.

Walking from room to room, she picked up her husband’s socks, wet towels, poured his milk into a cup from the jug on the table and kept reminding him to wear a cotton shirt. Then she smoothed on some moisturizer on his face and fished out some papers he had been looking for.

How Men Perceive WomenFeminists the world over continue to wage the war to right gender inequities. Several organizations have issued stern warnings and laid strict codes of behaviour towards the fairer sex. One would therefore imagine that the landscape against which the interaction between the two sexes takes place has changed to one of non-threatening, non-sexist, mature behaviour. The truth however is, that nothing can ever change the light in which man perceives woman.

The side effects of BandhsKnown all over the world as the ‘general strike’, a weapon that was considered the ultimate expression of protest and dissent against government policies, the ‘bandh’ as we know it is a particularly Indian phenomenon. Unlike the Europeans, for whom the phrase ‘general strike’ was enough to induce terror, conjuring up images of millions of lost man-hours and productivity, we Indians tend to take the term ‘bandh’ with a big pinch of salt.
