Genesh Temple New YorkThe first temple in America started off as a small house where daily worship and pujas were conducted by volunteer priests. This house in Queens, New York was part of the property acquired by the Hindu Temple Society of North America, a non-profit organization founded on 26th January 1970. Why New York? Mainly because of the large population of Indians in New York and the adjoining states. Also New York is a major entry point to the U.S.

It is built in accordance with the agama shastras and 26 yantras were installed by Sri La Sri Padrimalai Swamigal.  The temple celebrated its 30th anniversary in July 2007. Love in the OpenOne thing that always strikes you whenever you leave the shores of India for the first time, is how open people are in the West about expressing their love. It is nearly always startling when one encounters it for the first time, even though we come from the land of the Kama Sutra, and are a physically expressive people on the whole. People are still reticent about expressing themselves physically in the open in India.
