Long distance relationshipIt takes a special sort of person to make a long distance relationship work. The question, “Will this work?” is commonly asked. There’s no one, right answer. People have met and dated over thousands of miles and wound up soul mates. And people have met, dated over thousands of miles and wound up hurt and wounded.

Although there are definite hardships associated with this relationship style, those that can thrive in a long distance relationship see those hardships as strengths, too.

True, you don’t get to cuddle every night, you don’t have a shoulder to lean on, but what long distance relationships do provide many with are lasting relationships based on getting to know the person for who they are, not what they act like.

Though it is important to know a person’s mannerisms firsthand, the edge of the relationship comes in the conversations via phone and e-mail. And the many cute things you can do to make the relationship work.

Girl proposing boyI think it must be difficult for a man to directly approach a woman who thinks is interested in him. Especially after they are more aware than ever that today’s woman knows her mind and her expression of dislike can be quite painful. So, it might be a good idea to make sure that she is interested and then make the next move. Here are five signs that she’d definitely say “yes” to a date - or maybe even two!

If you happen to run into her somewhere you will notice that there is a flurry of reactions among her friends. They start walking like cars on the reverse gear and smiling, giggling and nudging each other, they exchange meaningful glances as they move away leaving the two of you alone. This is a sure sign that not only does she like you, she has been talking to her girlfriends for hours about how much she likes you, dreams about you, writes your initials on everything she can think of and they just wish you’d ask her out already so they can all talk about something or someone else for a change!

Looking beyond the sparkle and romance of a wedding, it is important that we get into the nitty-gritty of what makes a marriage last. Rosemary John finds out the importance of undertaking pre-marital counseling, which helps to prepare couples for the sanctity of marriage, and a long and happy wedded life thereafter.

The institution of marriage has weakened substantially over the past years. People are marrying later; fewer are getting married; and many of those who do, often land up in divorce court. Have we ever wondered and given a serious thought as to why this is happening? As a life-long commitment and a sacred institution, marriage too requires a serious preparation. “In our country,” rues Dr. Madhavi Desai, a marriage counselor with the family court, “this system of pre-marital counseling is yet to be introduced and understood. Apart from churches and religious institutions, we find such sessions conducted only in private NGOs,” she adds.

Mr. RightHow many times have I heard friends swoon and giggle and talk about the one great momentous event in their lives, that of having found Mr. Right. I still remember Shampurna (who is better known as Shampoo) shining bright as the daylight as she introduced Pijush to us. She just couldn’t stop talking about him. We were all so happy for her having found Mr. Right. And by the end of three months of dating just when we were expecting the wedding announcement. There was Shampoo completely heartbroken and shattered. Whatever happened? How did Mr. Right who seemingly did everything right suddenly go so wrong?

Well, the simplest answer will probably be, “all that glitters is not gold.’  Most of the times we get taken in by certain traits, mannerisms or looks that appeal to us. So, rule number one is to look beyond the superficial. According to psychologist and relationship expert Dr. Julia Hare, “the best looking, most romantic and extremely sexually appealing men and women need not be the best mate.’ Women sometimes get carried away by highly qualified and successful men. According to Dr. Hare even that is not an accurate yardstick.
