Fusion WeddingThe age old story of girl meets boy. Falls in love. And there is the grand finale, that is the wedding remains the same. But the twist in the kahani is that today our world is expanding at an unbelievable pace. So, people are moving out of their hometowns in search of better life opportunities. This in turn is dissolving the barriers of state, community and religion. Today mixed marriages are fast becoming a norm rather than stray occurrences.

Keeping pace with all these changes are the customs and traditions connected to the institution of holy matrimony. Today we have what is known as “fusion weddings”. My first experience of such an occasion was at the wedding of my friend Laeticia (a bengali Christian) and her fiancée Indar(a hutta khutta Punjabi sardar). It was a truly exciting affair.

Significance of HoneymoonThe word for honey is “meala” in Irish. The word for honeymoon, is “mi na meala” the “month of honey,” and refers to how the bride and groom spend that period of time following their marriage.

Irish monks first produced a fermented honey brew called “mead” for medicinal purposes, then found it could make people feel better. Following the wedding, a sufficient amount of mead was given to the bride and groom, along with special goblets, so they could share the unique brew for one full moon after their wedding, thus the term honeymoon was coined.

The picture perfect weddingWeddings, whether large extravaganzas or small family affairs, are invariably a style statement, and  a reflection of the personality as well as the beliefs upheld by the groom and bride. A wedding is by far the most celebrated day of our lives, an occasion which is the culmination as it were, of all our adolescent dreams and desires.

No longer just a series of simple traditional ceremonies, marriages have become a carefully orchestrated, designer event, at the heart of which still lies the solemn exchange of wedding vows. This is the day when a large chunk of fantasy and a bit of reality get to meet on a platform of opulence, aimed at making this ‘once in a lifetime event’ a treasury of cherished memories.
