Long distance relationshipI was quite surprised when my brother who had been married for a month decided to leave his wife in Hyderabad to complete her post doctoral studies and took up a new job in Guahati. Since, we were very close I asked him, “what’s the point in getting married if you are going to stay separately? “ my brother looked at me and said I know as an outsider it is difficult to understand the logic. But, it is a decision that we made mutually. Besides, it is not a permanent arrangement and we felt it is better for our relationship in the long run.”

This answer reminded me of the old Hindi adage ‘mia biwi raji to kya karega kazi?” Though this may not directly relevant to long distance relationships but simply implies when the people in a relationship have come to a certain agreement the onus and the power of making it successful lies completely with them.

Magic of courtship in marriageSeema put the duster down as she looked lovingly at the now rather weathered packet of letters. Letters, that Mohan had written to her during their days of courtship. Seema settled down on the chair near the window. She took out the yellowed sheets from the envelope and a dried rose fell into her lap. She smiled and took a trip back in time. Back to the day when Mohan presented that rose to her and quoted from somewhere,” just like my arms it’ll open wide and you’ll see my heart inside.’ Just then she heard the clock chime three. Almost reluctantly she traveled back to the present where her five year old son was waiting for mama.

Seema went through the rest of the day in her usual capable manner. But, the memory of the day during their courtship haunted her time and again. It’s been so long since Mohan had done something like that. Poor fellow! He hardly has the time for things like that she reasoned. Even that does not diminish the desire for a repetition of the experience.

Cats and CourtingWhether you stay in a high-rise apartment block, or in a quiet bungalow in a posh neighbourhood, it is unlikely that you’ve never heard the ear-splitting yowl of the tom-cat in search of his mate. This primitive sound, very much like the loud wailing of a new-born in a hospital ward can cause one to wake up from deep slumber and be forced to go to the loo in the middle of the night. Or it can bring some pretty lurid nightmares, if one refuses to get up.
