Provoked to ProtestA recent article in Deccan Chronicle focused on the fact that fourteen years after her first appearance on the modeling scene in 1993, the Aishwarya Rai brand was still hot property in Bollywood. Just reading this headline made me stifle an inner groan. It was not the first time I was realizing the complete indifference brand-builders and advertisers, producers and directors, in short, all manner of people making money by ‘selling’ ideas and personalities, have for the feelings of their audience.

Does any brand builder or producer worth his name ever actually carry out a survey on who would be the most popular choice to carry a particular product or role? They build an image with great care among themselves – and the personality who best fits that image is someone who does not have any visible personal wishes, attributes or desires rebelling against these commercial interests. Then they foist that personality on the audience with monotonous regularity, caring little for the reaction of the audience to this non-stop onslaught.

Parents as Friends? Not AlwaysCome to think of it, why should there be any reservations about the concept of ‘Parents as Friends’? Especially in the present day, when we have grown out of the parental generation of disciplinarians or those who set down rigid rules for the family. Parents today have grown up themselves with a mother and father who lavished them with love and only wanted their happiness and satisfaction.

Some of these parents underwent awesome sacrifices in order to send their children to the best schools and colleges. So why should the new generation of parents bring up their children with any different ideas? After all, if anything, there is now more money, more comfort and more luxury available. So shouldn’t this environment of plenty promote more ‘friendship’ among the two generations of kids and their parents, rather than reinforce older, more traditional power equations?
