Romance-The way that you love meThis is a scene I’ll never forget. I’m seated in a surgeon’s clinic, all keyed up because I need to undergo a surgery. I run my eyes over the anxious faces of the patients around me and see the same sense of distress in their eyes. Isolated by the forebodings of pain and suffering, each of us seems worried.

Then I see this couple, could be 40, could be less – reading a magazine and laughing over something. The man’s got his arm stretched along the backrest of the sofa and I can see his fingers stroking her cheek. I’m trying to figure out who’s the patient when she looks across at me, smiles and asks, “Surgery?” I nod and she says, “Me too. I have a tumour sitting pretty on my thyroid. I’m scared but he’s being doubly courageous for me.” She winks at her husband and he touches her head with his. I don’t get to meet the lovebirds again but this romantic image of the two remains in my mind and I know I shall always cherish it.

Listening MusicWe all know that eating healthy food, regular exercise and leading a fairly systematic and disciplined life holds the key to a healthy life. But, is it enough for us to have a healthy, disease free body and an alert mind to be able to improve the quality of our lives and enjoy life to the fullest? This is a question that has remained foremost on my mind ever since I met little Raju.

Raju was about six years old. I first met him at the cancer ward for children in the Adyar Cancer research centre. His body was frail, diseased and incapable of doing much. But his eyes, they were the windows of his indomitable spirit. He was sure that he would be able to walk to the garden and fly a kite even on the morning he died.
