Mother-in-lawsI was overwhelmed by the response to my post ‘The Mother-In-Law Matter’ which still continues to draw comments. Since this is apparently a matter very close to people’s hearts, I am inspired to write a sequel for your consideration – some tips for dealing with mothers-in-law.

In dealing with your mother-in-law, never strive for nobility, only for common sense. Remember that your mother-in-law is an old hand at proving to the world how right she is. If you get into the game of trying to win the moral high ground, you will lose.

Your attempt should be to prove to the world and yourself that you are doing the most practical, sensible thing in the circumstances. Avoid getting into discussions of what is right or wrong – just what ‘needs to be done’ and do it.

A Frined In NeedDrishya’s footsteps picked up speed as she walked the last few metres of platform to where her train waited. Even as she hurried, she could see the strangeness of her departure. “Please don’t worry – I will manage,” she had said, to not one but two sets of anxious parents – hers and Pradeep’s. With both of them wanting to see her off, she had been keen to avoid a tug-of-war farewell. “Better this lonely setting off than the tension of keeping each of them away from the others’ throats,” she was thinking to herself.

She had barely settled in with her luggage into the compartment when the train began to move on its night-long journey to Hyderabad – the city where she was moving – to a new assignment, a new life. As she watched images of Chennai slide slowly past, Drishya could not help the prickle of tears behind her eyelids, tears she thought had dried forever in the months following the accident that changed her life forever.

Housing helpRakesh was puzzled. Things between him and Sunaina, his wife had been going the usual way of newly-weds – some fights, some fun, a lot of passion and love to provide the delicious seasoning to everything. Then, for no apparent reason, they started developing some cold vibes and he was at a loss to explain why.

“At the time, neither of us were able to immediately connect the way the maid was behaving with our personal irritation with each other. It took a few weeks for us to understand and finally decide to get rid of her. After that, we changed the house rules – I am completely in charge of the house help. He never intervenes, unless I specifically ask for help,” reveals Sunaina.

Green Eyed MenaceEver interacted closely with a married couple of over forty or fifty years of marriage? Those of us fortunate enough to have such monumental couples still around us have ample opportunity to observe possible formulae for successful marriages. How do couples manage to stay together for so long, and in such apparent harmony?

In contrast, there is the couple who have just firmed up their relationship two months ago. Lets call them Homme (the man) and Femme (the woman). Every other week, either F is in a sulk with H over the excess time he is spending with this friends, or H is angry that F has been talking too much about her ex-boyfriend, M. The pull and push of their mutual attraction-antagonism continues week after week (extremely tiresome to some of their friends, but intensely riveting for them!). Feeding this cycle is the green eyed monster of Jealousy.

Love or LikeIt’s been over three years now and three years is a long time for anyone to be caught on the horns of a dilemma and not be able to resolve it. But where the heart is involved anything is possible. Ask Shilpa, a 26 year old, attractive young lady who can’t decide whether she ought to marry P or settle down with T.

“I like everything about P,” she confesses. “He’s dependable, strong and anchored in the same kind of family values I believe in.. But it’s T I love and there are many things about him that I don’t like, his arrogance for one thing. I don’t like the fact that T is too possessive about me.” Gosh, that must be some dilemma! Liking one guy, but loving another! Is this normal?
