Changing shades of togethernessIf your work often brings you into contact with married couples, like my consultation as a Tarot practitioner does, over a period of time you begin to notice a distinct difference in partners’ attitudes, usually depending on the vintage of the marriage. In this context, I am specially referring to the need for togetherness, and the way people’s attitude changes towards it, with time.

Among young people, who have been married just a few months or years, one encounters wives who yearn for their husbands to spend more time with them, help them with household chores, try to see their point of view – in short, take the place of the friends and family they left behind when they got married. In these cases, the husbands seem aware they are treading a difficult path. They steal a few moments with their friends every now and then, while attempting to stay true to the ‘family man’ image their wives have obviously built for them. In front of their friends, men may pretend as if they don’t care about their wives’ expectations or needs, but in fact they do, a lot. Young husbands also look for togetherness – a partner who finally looks up to them, gives them unconditional love and acceptance, and makes them qualified to be that wonderful thing: fathers!

Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris MartinIts happened again. British actress Gwyneth Paltrow, married to Chris Martin, the hauntingly gifted singer of the band Cold Play, has said that she would like to adopt children in order to have the kind of family she has always dreamed of. The couple already have two children of their own, and Gwyneth wants to avoid the rigours and stresses of more pregnancies and childbirth.

Such declarations to the media, while they may or may not result in actual adoptions, make one wonder at the trend of contemporary reality. Will Paltrow and Martin now take a shopping bag across the developing countries of the world a la Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, or Madonna and Guy Ritchie? Will we see pictures of them exclaiming over some Guatemalan children, or have them sneaking to a Kolkata orphanage, in order to have a piece of India to love? It appears all these possibilities exist.

The Third PresenceRomances and relationships that BENEFIT from a “third presence”? Surely not. We’ve all heard about the dreaded interfering in-law casting a shadow on a young couple starting out on their common journey.

No, this is quite a different matter altogether….we’re talking about the amazingly magical effect a pet can have on a relationship and on a home. It infuses moments of hilarity, tenderness, wonder and friendship…while creating a deep down bonding and caring that lays an ideal foundation for all the other relationships and responsibilities that may follow.

Take Shanker and Shivani. While she brought in a much-needed contribution of attractive furniture and artefacts that made their home really cosy, he brought in a rowdy, rambunctious labrador named Sam. At first Shivani was fazed at the prospect of taking on such a large and …well…hairy child so early on in her marriage. But each day, while Shanker was away at work, Shivani would find her hours filled by the presence of this friendly, loyal creature who would lay his head on her lap and offer her his unconditional love.
